Charman. The Ninjabread Man

The Ninjabread Man is a children's book by Katrina Charman, with art by Fabiano Fiorin, published in 2015. It is available at the Internet Archive. As you can guess from the title, this is a retelling of the "Johnny-Cake" story type, ATU 2025. The Fleeing Pancake. You can find out more at Wikipedia: Gingerbread Man.

Traditionally, the Johnny-Cake story is told cumulatively ("I've outrun an old man, and an old woman, and a little boy, and two well-diggers, and two ditch-diggers, a bear, and a wolf, and I can outrun you, too-o-o!"), but this story is not told in a cumulative style. Instead, the Ninjabread Man just says the same thing each time he escapes his pursuer... even the fox, another difference from the traditional story!

Here is a YouTube read-along:

I'll have several other "runaway pancake" stories to share at this blog, and having a variety of retellings is a great way to inspire young writers to come up with a retelling of their own. Any kind of food can go on the run in the world of the imagination!
