Chwast. 12 Circus Rings

The Twelve Circus Rings is a children's book by Seymour Chwast, with art by the author, published in 1993. It is available at the Internet Archive.

As you can guess from the title, it is a cumulative counting tale which can be sung to the tune of The Twelve Days of Christmas: "In the twelfth circus ring, my sister saw with me twelve animals laughing, eleven horseback riders, ten leapers leaping, nine jugglers juggling, eight bears performing, seven clowns a-clowning, six acrobats, five dogs a-barking, four aerialists zooming, three monkeys playing, two elephants, and a daredevil on a high wire."

There's also a fun math game (with answers) where you have to calculate how many bears there were in the 12 rings, how many horseback riders, etc. The math game is what makes this my favorite (so far) of the "Twelve (Days)" types of stories that I have read.

You can find out more about the artist, Seymour Chwast, at Wikipedia.

This book would be a perfect way to prompt a project to create your own lyrics to The Twelve Days of Christmas... for any time of the year!
